i want the torque simulation on squirrel cage rotor using the relationship between stator magnetic field and rotor magnetic field. I don,t understand the connection between those magnetic field and how it can produce the torque,i mean the vector of Bs and Br and how it produce the torque vector.Where the exact point on rotor surface which produce the torque revering to those magnetic field at certain time. I read the electric machinery and power system fundamentals by mc graw hill book, and it gets more confusing every time i look at it. And thanks alot for squirrel cage and empty stator simulation, it was very enlightening. I've doing it with books for weeks and still not understanding it.

Hello, I tried contacting you through both and email but neither of those modes worked, the phone said it was the wrong number and my email could not be sent. My name is Lydia Bussiere and I am senior engineering major. I am working on a senior project, and I am incorporating pedal power into my design of a power system. I have several questions, and I was wondering if you would be able to help me. I already have the 300W generator hooked up to my bike, and it is producing power. However, I am now getting into the part of my system design where I need to consider hooking it up to batteries. The system I am designing will be both pedal power and solar power. The batteries we are using for the solar power are going to be (probably) 12V AGM batteries, 100Ah, and we will have eight of them. I was wondering how the integration of my system might be most easily accomplished. Please let me know if this is something you can help me with, or if you can direct me to someone else who might know. I really appreciate it. Thank you.

I would be very interested in something that can simulate the effect of simple optics on laserbeam spot shapes / diameters / intensity profiles. Preferably including an adjustable beamwaist / divergence. For convex, concave and cylindrical lenses, for irises / slits and mirrors. No coatings or fancy materials. No spurious reflections. Just clean theoretical simulation. Would that be a challenge for you? :D

Hi! Before all, congratulations for your work, I really like your simulations! Just one note: in "Die Rolling Simulation & Histogram" the obtained distribution is called "normal", which in my opinion is not correct, because the normal distribution is a Gaussian one; I think you should call it a "uniform" distribution. Thanks again for your work, that I would like to use in my school lessons (with due citations to your web site, of course!). Sincerely. Giorgio

I´ve been used your software sometimes. Its usable, but has a problem (bug) in the die sinulator. If you select cero times to roll the die, and clic go, the simulator gives one result. Nevertheles, its great to show the tendence of a probability. Thanks.

Hey, I like your simulations! Do you think you can do a simulation of the workings of a 12 volt or 6 volt lead-acid battery? I have looked all over the internet for one but could not find one. Just a thought. --Fraser

I am very unsmart about amps and watts though dad has tried to pound it into me. I am a little of a conspery[sp?] theroist of late with our present state of affairs. I have always believed that if the family wants to watch t.v. that they should work for it. I do not want to pay for the extra tax they[they who?] want to put on my electric bill. I always thought we should work out for our own consuption of power. I am looking for the old fashion way of powering our own electric and such. Do you have an event out east of you? Or do you need a place? We have a huge restaurant and banquet area if you want to do one here. Please write back. I tried to e-mail you but my computer rejected it.

Referring your LED simulation the presentation does not represent the behavior of a normal LED. 1. The alteration of Band Gap between 0.5 and 2.00 eV has no effect on the voltage at witch the LED start emitting! 2. For all values of Band Gap the relationship between voltage and current I(mA) is always the same! 3. the relationship between voltage and current I(mA) is "zero" from 0 V to 2.52V when the current jumps to 51 mA! Then, until 3.00 V there is a strait (stepped) line until 3,00 V when the current is 58 mA. There is no LED with this behavior! 4. The "jump" on energy bands from P to N with 0 V is always the same for different Band Gaps! There is no such behavior! As a demonstration it has too many physical nonsenses to be useful as it is. Is it possible to improve it? Regards Jose Goncalves

dont worry about the spam!! Before my friend died suddenly we talked about making a bike AC generator like yours. Its so NEAT!!! I am sure Gary is smiling at me as I get the parts to make mine. Sure would have helped during Hurricane IKE .I had no power for 13 days. Would have liked to have been able to watch TV even if I had to pedal to do it. I have lost 30 pounds by dieting. I'll lost the rest while peddaling to watch my faves/shows after work in the evenings.I will be healthier and in GREAT SHAPE!!! Thank You from the bottom of my heart for sharing your design with me and others. :} GOD BLESS!!!!!

Dear Sirs: Forgive the ignorance, but could you be so kind to clarify something for me? On your website you mention: if for example you are trying to measure current from supplied by a 24V power source, and you had a volt meter that measured down to a 0.001 Volt resolution, you could hook install a 2 foot section of 12 gauge AWG wire into your supply line, and put your voltage meter probes on either end of the 2 foot section of wire. You would then take your reading and divide it by (2 x .00187 ohms) to get your current. I do have a 24 volt 125 Amp alternator that I am trying to measure the amperage that is going into my 24v battery pack. When I make the 2' piece of 12AWG wire, and what side of the supply line to the battery should I hook it? To the positive or negative? And, when I put my voltage meter probes on "either end" of the 2' wire, does that mean that I put the black probe on the negative side of the battery, and the positive probe on the 2' piece of wire near the positive side of the battery? I have a Wavetek Meterman 35XP multimeter. I also had bought a shunt to use to measure the current, but it did not work? I appreciate any help you can give me, bud elkin

I'm working on building a bicycle generator and I'm trying to decide on what kind of Pm motor to get. Your analysis in the FAQ is good but I'm still confused at what will be optimal for me. I few years ago I got a number of 105 avg power on a bike and have gotten stronger since. I'm trying to power a 79 watt TV. Then I prefer to spin rather than go hard (reason for low power earlier) what would you suggest for the generator do I want to go for more or less volts? Thanks

Hello, Very good website with loads of info. I have very limited expierience in dealing with electrics. I am an artist specialising in pyrography. This involves burning pictures into wood. I use an electric machine that burns pictures into the wood by heating up a metal wire. There is a control system from 1 to 10 to adjust the heat output. The machine I use is called a peterchild pen. It can be seen on www.peterchild.co.uk . The input is A.C mains 230V 30VA The ouput is 2.5 V.A.C 10A.Max Is it possible to power this machine? Can I bypass the machine and connect the hotwire pen directly to a generator? This way the faster I pedal the hotter the pen becomes and visa versa. My plan to to cycle around ireland promoting my artwork through demonstrations while promoting the idea of producing your own energy. If you can help me out i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Brendan Power.

Powering a television set, etc. via a human-powered stationary bicycle (treadmill, etc.) would seem to be "a dream come true." What a practical way for a nation to become more fit! What do you think? Doug Soderstrom (Retired Professor of Psychology/Poet/Writer)

Thanks for responding so quickly. I managed to download the LABview Run-Time Engine version 5.1.1 and install it and - voila - the simulation worked! I just have a bit of a problem. I'm a high school science teacher and would like to set up a work sheet for my gr12 students using this simulation. I'd like them to draw a few graphs by using the loop length, width etc as the independent variable. Unfortunately the values in the Vab box flash past too quickly, even when the loop rotates at its slowest, therefore they cannot be tabulated. Could you send me a table/(s)of values and the conditions or tell me how to slow down the simulation in order to capture the values myself - this will make the simulation much more useful concerning correct data capturing methods. I would also like to know what formula can be (was) used to calculate the enclosed flux so that I can ask the kids to used it and calculate a few value on their own. The unit in the Vab box is'rms' - what does that stand for? Why is the spinning value (in radians per second) not constant although the loop spins at a constant velocity? Can the value for the magnetic field strength be seen anywhere as one turns the knob? So many questions, but many more thanks for the excellent simulation. Hope to hear from you soon

January 15, 2007 nkswamy@vsnl.net Chennai, India These simulation lessons in math and science are the best I have seen. It is great that they are offered free, because they can be put within the reach of poor children in India, and also greatly add to the effectiveness of teachers without the sort of communication skills that teaching these subjects needs. I would request a complete set of the lessons that are not included in the downloads and which are available on request. Can you tell me whether and how this teaching approach can be adapted for teaching blind children - which is a special interest area for me apart from poor children with other disabilities.

I have some books that I can study from, of course, but your collection is unique in format as well as bringing diverse, but related, topics together.

10-15, 2003 Cole augidog33@hotmail.com I was wondering if i could get all of the physics and calculus simulations for the science software. I don't really have many suggestions because i haven't saw any of the simulations i can relate to. I think they are good thus far. The only thing i could think of would be to include a little more text explaining each simulation. Unless it's already there and I just haven't saw it. Other than that though it appears to be good.

9-9, 2003 Roger Reinsch Roger@ShotScan.com I just loaded the Empty Motor Simulation. I can more easily learn what I can see. Your simulation does show the basics of the Stator of a 3-phase motor. If I have terminology right, this is a single-pole motor (one revolution per cycle of the power line) that would turn at 3600 RPM on the US grid. I would like to see simulations of (a) more poles for slower speed but more torque and, therefore, also some simulation of the rotor. It still is magic to me how AC motors with NO permanent magnets actually go round and round. Please let me know of others that might be available. Thanks. Roger Comment re: how the sim runs on my machine (P4 at about 1.4GHZ with Win2K). The speed control provides very few slow speeds. With the needle any where off SLOW, it's way to fast to see anything. Also, when I move the window on the screen, the animation gets very herky-jerky (not a very scientific term, sorry). If I later click the title bar of the window, the sim smoothes out. It will stay smooth even when it's not the t

6-4, 2003 Dave Cutcher cutchis@shaw.ca Neat Stuff. I'll use some for my High School Electronics Class. Money for education is always tight. I do have some older computers (P166, 32M Ram)that I am substituting for real test equipment. This should be easy, but is beyond me right now. I need to have a "signal generator" that will output through the sound card. I should be able to generate at least a single tone in sine or square wave. My intent is to be able to use it for bench testing and basic op amp work. Thanks for the beautiful work on your site. Cutch
6-2, 2003 Charles SupraSierran@hotmail.com Thank you so much for providing this resource. I am very poor and, (perhaps contrary to your intended recipient --but by necessity) a self educator; and when lucid... well, rapacious and eclectic. These small, simple tools appear quite useful and its the day to day curiosities that keep me alive I think. I can only make payment with future suggestions, and I look forward to doing so. Again thank you.

5-22, 2003 David Christensen David@VR2L.net Hi. I just had this idea of making a 3d-scientific program were it is possible to build a shape, machine and whatever -were you can deffine natural forces (and share them) and also chemical components, and a atmosphere in were your machine should work -all deffinened in an XML-document -and then it can somehow calculate an approx result (by plugins also developed by users) on how your machine or invention would work.. A open source project I had in mind.. So, is that anything you would like to go on with? Scienceshareware is just the place for this to be, I recon.. Write to me anuone if you are interested.
