Page 13 - Software

I'm sure that Canon has put a lot of time into the software that comes with purchasing the SD630 camera.  But I don't want to install any more software on my computer than I have to.   And you should not need to if you are using Windows XP.

The beauty of this and many other digital cameras today is that all you have to do is hook up the USB cable from the computer to the SD630 camera, and the camera dialog box pops up as shown below in Figure 1.

In other words, your computer sees the SD ram card on the SD 630 camera as if it were another hard drive.

You can access the pictures by either of two methods:

  1. Use the camera wizard which limits you on file naming and placement options, but makes it easy.

  2. You can click on the option shown in figure 2 below

The window below allows you to look at picture files on your SD630 or other types of digital cameras.  Do not open them from here!  It is better to fast copy them to a temp directory on your computer hard drive, then look at them.  For one thing, it will help save your battery power.

Also - some USB cameras have some flaws with their USB drivers.  So it is best to get in quick, copy the pictures, then delete them off the camera, then get out quick of the camera SD memory card by un-plugging the USB cable or turning the camera power off.  BUT before you do that, make sure that you open the first and last picture from the batch you just copied off of your camera.  Once you have deleted photos off a digital camera, it can be very hard to recover them.
