PAGE 15 The five patterns I show, are only a few, but if you like to run the ball first, these are great pass plays and will keep the defense honest. In youth football, the practice hours are often time, quite limited …you only have so much time. Each pattern can be taught in less than an hour, but must be practiced every practice. Each play should be run a minimum of 4 times each, each practice. There are many other patterns you can teach such as the Fade, the Curl, the Post, and various screens. It’s up to you to see if you can squeeze the practice time in. Be good at what you do, having a dozen patterns is not as important as doing five patterns very well. Once your Quarterback and receivers are successful with these patterns, you might want to add several patterns each week, but not at the expense of the patterns above. Remember, you can flop these plays and run them to two sides….you must watch and call wide side plays to the wide side. You cannot make decent yardage by calling a “boot” right when you are on the right hash. I will be adding an article soon on more advanced routes and a simple, but effective pass protection scheme with pass block techniques for youth teams.
